Why does it sometimes seem like history has skipped its glacial angst to burst into life and change in front of our eyes?

Why is this election in the US such a moment or a collection of such moments?
Heres ONE line that succinctly captures the whole revolution:

"Rosa Parks sat in 1955. Martin Luther King walked in 1963. Barack Obama ran in 2008"
